Shinjuku Mikoshi Festival
The Raiden(Thunder and Lightning) Shrine community/clan is one of the 3-6 different communities in the Shinjuku ward participating in the annual Mikoshi Matsuri. With the help of the mayor, seniors, police and even mall executives, families representing these shrines would parade around Shinjuku for the entire day with the shrines on their shoulders. While walking out of my hostel on 26 May, I happened to see this particular group of locals.
I decided to turn one entire day of unplanned travel into a photojournalistic adventure to capture this tradition in the 21st century.
